Giants Add Brad Penny

Today, the Giants signed Brad Penny for under $100 thousand after he cleared waivers resulting in his release by the Boston Red Sox. Penny will be an immediate upgrade to the 5th slot in the rotation of the Giants’ rotation, a spot that has struggled mightily since Randy Johnson’s injury. Penny hasn’t been the same pitcher since his injury over a year ago, but he adds stability as a 5th starter. Here is how he compares to Ryan Sadowski and Joe Martinez this year:

Name K/9 BB/9 FIP tRA
Brad Penny 6.08 2.87 4.48 5.21
Ryan Sadowski 5.40 5.40 4.71 5.50
Joe Martinez 5.81 3.08 4.42 5.56

While, the difference doesn’t seem too substantial, one must take into account the level of opposition. For example, the majority of Martinez’s and Sadowski’s starts were against teams such as Florida, Houston, Arizona, etc. In comparison, we know that Penny had his fair share of dealings with New York, Tampa Bay, and all teams with a DH.

Just to give a bit more perspective, this is Penny compared to Barry Zito:

Definitely a low-risk high-reward signing, which could play a vital role in determining how many games the Giants play in October.

It was a good thing that the Giants acquired Penny. Nice move.

Yes, and although I know the importance of small sample size, he was fantastic tonight in Philly. The velocity was there, he was throwing strikes, and he got A LOT of groundballs.
