Uribe Signed to Minor-League Deal

January 30, 2009

The Giants signed veteran infielder Juan Uribe to a Minor-League deal today. The 29-year old has an invitation to Spring Training, and it seems like he has a pretty good bet of sticking with the Big League club.

Uribe’s a below-average hitter with Pedro Feliz-like plate discipline (an IsOBP of 0.042, 5.3 BB%), and with his low contact rate won’t be an asset with the bat. His glovework ranges from adequate to above average depending on where you look- bUZR has him as being above average at second base, below average at third, and average at shortstop, while the Fans’ Scouting Report has him well above average at third, average at short and slightly above average at second. In any case, we’re probably looking at a 0.25 – 1 WAR player.

Uribe’s a quintessential backup infielder, so let’s hope that Bochy keeps him in that role. While I believe Emmanuel Burriss would benefit from more seasoning in the Minors, Uribe isn’t the type of player I’d send him down for.
